Unfortunately our time in San Salvador has been brief...we did try to find Jen's friend Ines...but despite a few numbers and what appeared to be an active ring, no answer. And the next time we had occasion to call it was late and we didnt want a reputaton as impolite Canadians, so maybe next time...

Unfortunately the city has a ridiculous reputation for crime..so much so that the traveller's hotel is actually right in the TICA bus station and you are told not to go out! The bus pulls into a compound and huge gates close and lock behind you.

We were even strongly encouraged to get directly back on the bus at 5:00 the next morning to head for Managua (which of course also has a reputation for crime) so what to do?

This is not the only reason we avoid big cities...we just generally find that we experience more in smaller towns.

There are very few places of real interest to us in El Salvador anyway...maybe Santa Anna and Suchitoto. San Salvador actually seems to be quite cosmopolitan and we would have liked to stay longer.

For our foodie friends, the best thing about it so far has been the pupusas...the national food of El Salvador. A pupusa is a corn meal mass stuffed with cheese. or beans or chicharron, or a combination thereof...and with curtido which is pickled vegetables and salsa piquante they are fabulous. And just like Lays potato chips, no one can eat just one.

Sadly, we move along quickly as we anticipate Nicaragua.
