Yes..the overland journey from Siem Reap to the Cambodian-Thai border was by far and away the worst we have experienced this trip.
We had asked around quite a bit about overlanding and about a big bus. Every person in our "van" had been promised a big A/C bus...but this is Cambodia.
So imagine the most rigorous off roading experience you can think of. Then imagine it without a four wheel drive vehicle. Imagine then that the vehicle you do have is a dilapidated van, without air, and with a sliding door that will nto close and holes in the floorboards. Now put about 19 people and their gear in it and bounce down the dusty trails of rural Cambodia for say, six or seven hours!
Then, when you reach the Thai border, stand around with your backpacks in the glaring sun and 40 degree heat for another two or so hours amid all manner of chaos...While we might miss the friendliness of the Cambodian people, we will not miss the lack of rules and lack of roads!
The other side of Poipet is Aranya Prathet and are we ever glad to be back in Thailand! We have another five or so hours to Bangkok but at least it is a big bus on paved roads!
The plan is to head somewhere south for a week or so and then meet up with Jamie and Rita. We are looking forward to Hua Hin, Ko Samet or Ko Chang as options for a little beach time.
