Well Traci (and everyone else)...we were eating at Penang Island on Dundas 20 plus years ago to get great malaysian cuisine and now here we are on Pulau Penang!

We spent the day walking around and exploring the historic sites, churches, mosques, temples and forts. The island may have been British at one time, but they sure didn't leave much of a mark...it is decidely Chinese (and Malay and Indian). It is interesting that things are very much divided along racal lines. Schools are very much Chinese girls, or Islamic boys etc.

We had a great roti canai and teh terik breakfast and took a local bus out to Battu Ferringhi (Portuguese rock), the beach area of the island. When we got to the end of the line (we were just riding the local bus to see the island) the driver asked us to get off to have kopi (coffee) with him PP1

. He bought us coffee and roti canai and would not take a thing...just another example of the amazing malaysian hospitality we have encountered everywhere so far!

The beach area wasn't quite what we were expecting...some very large resorts and I am certain there are much better beaches in Malaysia. For example, we loved Pangkor!

Tomorrow morning we leave to go back to Butterworth to get a bus north to Kuala Perlis, the spot where we catch the ferry to Pulau Langkawi. We'll expect to spend a few days on the beach and then try to find a boat headed to Thailand!
