After breakfast in our rooms we left the hotel and booked the Art Deco Walking Tour which started at 10am. The guide told us about how the city was rebuilt after the earthquake in 1931. Most building owners had little or no insurance and had to rebuild according to their means. Some buildings have Art Deco fronts and plain concrete behind, but some are very elaborate inside and out. The whole rebuilding was architecturally controlled so the overall effect is very striking. Even lamp posts and drain covers are in the style.
We stopped for lunch in Dannevirke after driving through the Manawatu Gorge and later stopped to walk on the beach at Paraparaunu where we watched the boat coming back from Kapiti Island, a bird sanctuary. The boat was pulled out of the water on a trailer behind a tractor so the passengers didn't get their feet wet. We had cider in a pub by the water, then continued on to Rhian and Peter's house in Lower Hutt. We sat on their balcony for a while, then Chris and Peter went to fetch Chinese food for dinner.
