Our 2day/1night tour of the Colca Canyon started at 8am from Arequipa and involved driving right around El Misti and Chachani ("dressed in white"), two of the most prominent volcanoes on the skyline. We reached 5000 metres and stopped for coca tea and cheese sandwiches before descending into the valley of Chivay. After a 6 hour drive we headed for the hot springs of La Calera, my favourite spa so far, the water was super hot (cooled from 80 degrees to 38 through a series of pools) and you could have Cuba Libres in the pool - awesome! It rained while we were in there which was also welcome relief from the heat. We got to know Ivo and Andrea here, a Czech couple living and working in Lima, who very kindly invited us out in Lima for the end of the week.

That evening we went to a folklore show and dinner, in which myself and Andrea were forced to dance, worse for Andrea as she had to perform the Chujcho, a dance that tells the story of a yellow fever outbreak in the valley, where the people started to convulse and the cure was to hit them with ropes to get rid of the evil spirit! There is a very amusing video of this somewhere!

Next morning was a 6am start to get to the Cruz del Condor viewpoint. The morning was perfect, clear and warm so we were very lucky to see condors flying at eye-level. It's a shame we didn't have longer to walk down into the canyon but time was limited as we had to get to Lima by Friday so no hiking time!

I'm glad you had some nice weather again (a pity for the Machu Picchu).
