James eats food again (yay!) and feels much better - no headache!  (Ed JJ - Altitudes a b***h.)
No rain!  So we headed down to Laguna Rojo (Red Lake) complete with flamingos which was picturesque with the snow capped mountains in the early morning light.

Heading north for Uyuni and the Salt Flats we passed many more lakes and most spectacularily 'The Stone Tree'.  The lava deposit has been worn away by the wind and sand causing some amazing natural sculptures.

Laguna Negra (Black Lake) kept us company for lunch in the rain.  More amazing rock formations surrounded us and bore the brunt of a few stunt photos.  we left them all stand - promise!
Breifly we stopped in the mining town of San Cristbal for fuel and supplies.

Approaching Uyuni we stopped at the Cemetery of Trains (James loved but me not so keen) where we played on swings and see-saws made from 100 yr abandoned trains.

Pulling into Uyuni in more rain and our drivers searched for hostels for the night. I had read not to stay in Uyuni for your tour although many people do.  Uyuni looked like a complete dive on arrival. The hostels rarely had warm showers but we managed a quick one complete with the dodgiest electrics you ever saw!

Jaime then escorted us into town to check out Carnival in full swing. Bolivian carnival is mad, very different to Argentina and infinitely preferable as a participant, no fancy costumes, brightly coloured bin-liners and traditional dress everywhere. The main attraction is that everyone is armed either with a water gun, a water balloon, or a can of spray foam. Having been doused within minutes of leaving the hostel, the four of us quickly bought two cans of foam and joined in the fun. The main drawback of being armed is that the locals think you're fair-game, no holds barred! Watch the video for an idea of the mess.
