The Moeraki Boulders were an unexpected find and were really quite strange. They seem at odds with nature as they are so incredibly round - see pics it'll make more sense of my rambling!
Oamaru next and with the evening closing in we headed out to the Little Blue Penguin colony at the end of the harbour. Its a natural colony of Penguins which are heavily monitored and tourised. Every evening the Penguins start grouping into 'rafts' about 200 meters out to see and then as a group (safety in numbers) come ashore to they're nests. We saw about 180 birds land during the evening which was pretty amazing. Apparently they find their way home by sight after being out at sea maybe 25 miles
The next day and a long drive ahead we abandoned all caution and went for a morning Victorian Tea at Annie's. It was great, Oamaru was originally the main port in South Island and the Victorians build many sumptuous buildings including an opera house! The Tea Rooms had originally been a drapery but now with staff in full Victorian we had cream tea and Liz had cake from the trolley.
Steampunk just down the road was also quite fun. With a look at what the world might of looked like if everything ran on steam. Very Doctor Who...
Heading North we went off road and headed into the interior along a gravel track looking for Edoras from Lord of the Rings. It was hard going so stopped at the first vantage point for a quick look before head back. As always the views were spectacular.
