The last couple of days have been very hectic. From Lima we went to Paracas and caught a boat out to the Ballestas Islands. The Islands were filled with hundreds of birds, including Peruvian boobies, storks, and my personal favourite, penguins(!). There was also a lot of sealions sunning themsleves on the rocks.
We then headed on to Huacachina, a tiny oasis town in the middle of sand dunes. From there we went sand buggying and sand boarding which was great fun. The buggying was a bit like a long rollercoaster as we raced up and down the sand dunes. The boarding was even better as we got to lay on a little board and launch ourselves head first down the steep sand dunes. We saw a gorgeous sunset and then free camped in the desert after lots of pisco sours, which were surprisingly nice!
The next day we drove to Nazca and got to see the Nazca lines from a tiny plane (6 people including the pilot). Unfortunately beacuse it was so bright they were a bit hard to see except for the astronaut and hummingbird which are on reddish rock.
On leaving Nazca we stopped at Chachilla Cemetary, where the Nazca people buried their mummified dead. Due to the heat and lack of rain the mummies are very well preserved, with parts of their skin and hair intact, which was a little strange to see.
