We made it to the capital of Peru and stayed at a lovely hotel in a room with a balcony which I could see Plaza San Martin from, and it was very pretty (if noisy) at night. We went down to Miraflores one day and wandered around the artesan markets which had lots of nice things. We went to the inquisition museum and saw some torture instruments and reconstructed cells which was fairly interesting. I tried and failed repeatedly to get into the cathedral which contains the bones of Pissaro (the leader of the Spanish conquistadors) but I did go into the San Francisco monastery which had an amazing library, with an estimated 25,000 books, as well as many beautifully decorated chapels. The monastery was built over the city´s catacombs, which contain over 25,000 bodies and the femurs and skulls were rather bizzarely arranged into concentric circle patterns.
