My family came to visit for the entirety of the Westerville North spring break, and besides the fact that I was fighting back a cold the whole time, I had a great time with them. I got to play "tour guide" and show them all around Oaxaca. I even got to sound like an expert at most of the tourist attractions, because I had just been there the week before with the Estes Family.
I love my family.
Arriving Friday night, the adventure started at an apartment owned by other missionaries, because the Shaver Mansion was too full to accommodate my family as well. Saturday was spent at an incredible natural wonder, called the petrified or mineral waterfalls (Hierve el Agua). Sunday was a *gasp* sunrise Easter Service at the school. Other family visit days were spent doing and re-doing exciting things like eating Oaxacan food, visiting the Tule Tree, the rug village, the painted animal village, the black pottery village, Monte Alban, the Wycliffe Offices in Oaxaca, the Paper Factory and art Museum, some old churches and the town square, a huge museaum in an old church convent... and various other things...
I don't remember exactly all the things we did, but I do remember enjoying the time I was able to spend with my family (except for the Complainers Club game of Settlers of Catan we played). I love all of them, and catching up was really nice. I'm pretty excited to get home thursday and see everyone again. Might have to take my Mom out to dinner on her birthday, since Scott and Sarah are ditching her and going to Prom instead.
It was also nice for them to get a feel for what I'm doing (and not doing) down here. I think it will help them relate a lot better to me this summer when I want to bring up different thoughts and tell different stories related to my experiences down here.
Probably the only bad thing about their visit is that my mom found different things she wanted me to go out and buy for her before I came home. I've probably got 10 pounds of stuff to bring home for her now, and frankly, I'm not sure i have the space for it all :-)
