April 5th - April 12th.

Donna's Sister, Melody, and her family (the Estes Family) came to visit for the week that was Spring Break at OCS. This was the week leading up to Easter. Melody, Keith, Steven and Rebeka (8th graders?) came to visit family and to see Oaxaca for the first time. Because neither Dave nor Donna had committments at the school that week, they took their family on the full tourist tour of Oaxaca. Seeing as how I didn't have much else to do, I bummed along for just about every activity (good thing the Suburban holds eight :-)

This means I finally got to see all the cool Oaxaca things people visit Oaxaca to see. I went to the Sunday market in Talacolula; it's a great huge market along the main streets in a small village, and people travel from all kinds of surrounding villages to buy and sell their wares. I bought an awesome hammock. I saw the Tule Tree - the World's (at least the Western Hemisphere's) biggest tree (circumference). There's a whole town built around it - not to mention an entire tourist industry of shops and food stalls. I went to a village where they weave rugs from naturally dyed, handspun threads. I went to a different village where they carve and intricately paint animals in a very folksy style. I went to some new restaurants, and re-visited some cool attractions downtown. I even got to visit Monte Alban, which was something I was itching to do since the day I arrived. In fact, I'm sure I did even more than I mentioned here - but - I waited over a month to write about it, and memory loss has taken it's toll. Sorry.

Also, one of the days of that week some of the guys from OCS came over and whooped my butt in Risk. In an ego recovery attempt, I suggested we play a game of Scrabble - I ended up winning, but only because I was able to add an -est to a triple point word the last play of the game. Also, I showed these Mexico kids how us Westervillians play Super Smash Bros. for N64. Boy do I miss stabby.

Overall, I had a really great time spending time with some new people, while at the same time seeing all sorts of cool new things. Secretly though, the week was just a countdown to Friday the 10th, when my family showed up.
