Goodbye Adelaide

After a mad few weeks over Xmas and New Years, today was departure day. We had packed all our worldly goods into a 2-year time capsule for storage until we return. With great sadness I had sealed up all my lovely toys - my digital TV receivers, my hard disk video recorders with the wondrous time-shift function, my hi-def LCD's, my broadband modem - in the tragic knowledge that when I see them again they will all be hopelessly obsolete. Goodbye 21st Century - I'm going to miss you.
Finally after weeks of farewell parties and a last minute 2000km roadtrip to spend New Years with our friend Garri, his lovely wife Christie and their two kids in Victoria it was time to hoist my 75kg of luggage onto the weigh-in at the checkin counter at Qantas. After watching some poor bastard having to unpack his luggage while his wife and kids screamed at him for screwing up I prayed our bathroom scales hadn't failed me and allowed each item to sneak in under the 32kg limit. Time for a last minute sniffling goodbye to Liz who was going to stay a couple of extra months to take care of last minute things and cram in a Spanish course I crossed the tarmac at Adelaide airport (for the last time?) to start my long commute to my new office on the other side of the planet.
Where's that? Well I had decided that 8 years in Adelaide was long enough and accepted a job with the Fisheries Department in the Falkland Islands, off the southern tip of South America. Next stop. Santiago... More thumbnails ...
