I know it is not the same one the song was talking about BUT for me my trip to San Jose, Costa Rica was via London, Frankfurt (where I met my travel buddy Anna) and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The flight passed quickly as we slept most of the way. We landed at 4:30am and headed to our hotel... thankfully they let us check in early as tiredness had kicked in now and we were in need of a quick nap before heading off to explore.
We had our first taste of Gallo Pinto (a traditional breakfast of rice, beans and eggs) in a local cafe then went for a wander around the centre. San Jose was not what I was expecting at all. I felt much safer (probably due to the large police presence in the centre) and it wasn't as full of tourists as I thought it would be
According to my guidebook (which we later learned was full of lies. This being the first :) ) the view from the nearby INS building was worth a look. We headed to the visitors entrance and explained this to the security guard. He looked at us a bit funny but waved us through telling us to take the lift to the 11th floor. We soon realised that we were the only 'visitors' as we were the only ones without workers ID badges and everyone around us was looking at us as if to say 'what are you doing here?' The view was ok but not really what we were expecting. We left quickly as felt so out of place and after checking the book again we realised the museum used to be on the 11th floor before it was moved outside. Before you could get views all around the city rather than just the small part you can see now. Such guiris!
There were some nice parks nearby so we spent some time there before heading to the Mercado Central for some dinner. We picked the restaurant with the most people at it (standard holiday tactics) and both ordered a casado (a typical dish with chicken or meat, rice, fried plantain and vegetables and/or salads).
Day one done. Still hasn't set in I am really here yet!
