Today was a pretty incredible day. Our group woke up early and headed to a butterfly farm that was about a 20 minute drive from our hotel. When we arrived of course we had the customary cup of coffee and then entered a garden that was enclosed with netting so that the butterflies would be contained. Since Costa Rica has 1,500 species of butterflies there were many different types to see as they flew around and landed on our group. Since the butterflies were used to humans it was easy to get very close and take pictures.

Next we headed to the Cafe Britt Coffee Tour. I was surprised by the absence of rows of plants. Rather we simply walked through big green bushes that contained the coffee beans. We learned all about the steps taken starting with planting the beans and ending in a cup of gourmet coffee. Cafe Britt is one of the largest exporters in the country and our tour was very commercialized complete with a theatrical history of coffee in Costa Rica. It was very informative and of course I bought some souvenirs for the family. Next week we are headed to a more mom-and-pops type coffee farm so that will be interesting to compare the two.

Finally, this evening my four roommates and I were taken to dinner by our two wonderful professors, Dr. Janet Burke and Dr. Ted Humphrey, at a Peruvian Restaurant named INKA. The food was incredible as well as the discussions with our professors. I had a fancy meal of salmon that was fantastic and also tried octopus. The more time I spend here the most I realize how un-cultured I am, but I'm working to improve that! :)

Well I have plenty of reading and reflecting to do by class tomorrow so I will update my blog again when I have a chance! We are unsure of our plans for this weekend still.....
