I have to talk about the food, it is really the only complaint I have here! These people would not know a vegetable if it clubbed them over the head. I think there was something that might have been a carrot in a dish yesterday, but if it was it was cut too small to make a positive identification. Breakfast is breakfast, the kids have milk with a meal supplement and cookies, I have yogurt and fruit. Lunch is 3 courses, the first is usually pasta, or a heavy cream soup, or something with potatoes (which yes, technically are a vegetable, but so much starch). Second plate is meat, either on it's own or served with fries. Third course is dessert, which generally is not sweets. Dinner is similar to the second plate at lunch, maybe just meat, often with fries. But, everything is deep fried, fried, or covered in oil, I am not joking you. I have never seen so much oil in my life! Or salt for that matter, they put it on everything. So basically you have starch in the form of pasta or potatoes, and meat, and a whole lot of grease. Oh but don't forget the bread! The hk's were asking me about what I eat home, and I was politely trying to explain that I generally eat a bit more in the way of vegetables (understatement of the year). They laughed, and were telling me that the dad hates veggies, and the kids won't eat them...they make what they are told by the family, because they don't like the food either! I thought that was funny, that they cook all this food all the time and they don't even like it themselves.

I had to stop eating the dinners though, it was just way too much meat and grease for me. Let me say though, this is not typical Spanish fare, although in my experience they do eat more meat that I would at home, most people do know what a vegetable is, and use them quite frequently!! This is just one family, and what they choose to have. Instead at dinner I have fruit, and sometimes yogurt. There aren't any vegetables to be had, (other than tomatoes, and those are a fruit anyway! Plus they are asqueroso, disgusting) so fruit it is. I still have what is served for lunch, which is the main meal where the family eats together. Dinner is more casual, the kids and I just eat in the kitchen. Anyway, tonight I am having my fruit, and the 10 yr old boy comments on it again. He can't get over the idea that I would choose to eat fruit on a regular basis, he has to be forced to eat it. So he says to me that it isn't healthy for me to eat fruit all the time! Now I would agree that for an extended period of time, it's not the best option, veggies would be far better. But for the short term, I think I will survive. The best part is, he says this to me while he is eating a plate full of fried chicken and fries, drowned in ketchup!! Definitely an opportunity area for his school to brush up on this year.
