So, if you are ever in Rome, having a good time, and wondering when to leave...a good sign is when you return to your hostel at about 9pm, to find the place swarming with carabinieri (military police)!! This was my evening last night, how was yours?? It was supposed to be my last night in Rome, and I was going back to my room to get a sweater. Outside the building were about 5 carabinieri, I didn't think anything of it as they are all over the place in Rome. When I got up to the hostel though, there was about 5 of them inside as well....surely this can't be good.

The hostel I was staying at was a bit of a whim. I had intended to stay somewhere else, somewhere with history and a good reputation. But at the last minute I saw this place online, they ahd only been open for 2 months, but it was run by 2 girls from Calgary!! And what the website described and the actuality were quite different. It wasn't bad, just not the way they made it sound. Anyway, as it turns out, they didn't have a licence and were operating illegally! So the carabinieri shut them down. Which meant that at about 10 pm, everyone was kicked out, with all of their stuff. Most people weren't there as they had gone out to a pub crawl, so their stuff was put out on the sidewalk for them.

The owners weren't even in town, just the highly underpaid staff who had no idea what to do. They began to scramble to find places to stay, but this is the weekend in Rome and beds are few and far between. I decided not to stick around to see what happened, instead I got my money back (a feat in and of itself) and headed to the train station. Jumped on the next available train heading in the direction of Nice, and here I am now!!

The picture I took of everyone out on the sidewalk with all their bags is a classic. Most people were really pissed off, especially those who had paid for 4 or 5 nights in advance. I had a good laugh though. I thought it was pretty entertaining!

So, now I am in Nice for 4-5 days, then back to Italy (Florence and Venice). It is very exciting to be able to understand what people are saying to me once again! Vive la France!
