I buy supplies for breakfast at the convenience store in town and discovery some Hungarian ingenuity. They have the pasztet meat paste in toothpaste like tubes. This simplifies my sandwich making even further and eliminates the mess of storing unused portions.
Today’s route leads through the Hungarian countryside, away from the Danube. The first notable town is Mosonmagyarovar, which has a castle and old town. I stop to eat lunch on the river and I buy some peaches from a fruit stand for dessert. The guy takes great offence at me touching his fruit and insists that he has to pick out ones I get.
On my way through town a young guy on a bicycle comes up beside me and asks me some questions. He offers me food, but I’m all full from just eating. Our ways separate and he wishes me luck. The bicycle path outside of town is buzzing with people heading in and out of town. Even more people than in Austria bicycle here. There are a lot of people riding electric powered bicycles in Hungary as well. This seems surprising as the areas I’ve been in so far have all been very flat.
From the border town of Komarom it is about 20 km to Tata, where I figure I will camp for the night. The guide book says that the next section is very strenuous and I must buy my food and water supplies before leaving town. I heed the advice, even though I don’t really believe the strenuous part as there are no mountains in sight.
As I cycle to my campsite the source of the unusual grunting and yelling sounds I had been hearing becomes evident. There is a karate camp practicing on the lawn near by.
Tonight’s dinner of sandwiches is a delicacy for me as I’ve indulged myself and bought extras like cheese, tomatoes, peppers, and mustard. The first sandwich is incredibly spicy and I think it must be the Hungarian mustard as I bought mild peppers. The next ones however aren’t so spicy so I don’t know what it might have been.
