Where I stayed
Bolka i Lolka Hostel
I stop at the border to eat breakfast. The old border control buildings are abandoned as there are no longer any checks at internal borders of the European Union. I’m all alone until a couple with a young kid stops to look at the buildings. Most likely to show their son how things used to be.
It starts to rain when I leave, but it turns out to be downhill all the way to Żywiec. I just blast along with my rain coat on, the hood pulled tight around my face to keep it from blowing off. I must be quite the sight, but it is rather fun gliding down the mountains at speed even in the rain.
It starts to rain again as I eat lunch on the peak. As it doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon I head off. It’s a very fast downhill all the way into Bielsko-Biała and I beat the storm there. It soon catches up, and just to add to the thrill of the driving rain my front tire goes flat. I marvel at how lucky I am to be right beside a gas station when it happens as I still haven’t yet replaced my broken bicycle pump. I buy a new pump and tube at the bicycle store just down the road after patching my tire up.
After buying my ISIC card, so that I can get cheaper train tickets outside of Poland, it is already evening time. I ask the lady if there are any cheap hostels in town and she directs me to the youth hostel next to a school. It was probably the best value of any place I’ve stayed. Only 25 zł, ended up in a room all by myself, did my laundry, and on top of all that, it was run by several of the most friendly and helpful old ladies I’ve ever met.
I go to a restaurant on the old market square above the town castle. The spaghetti a’la carbonara is the best spaghetti I’ve ever eaten. It tastes just like bacon and eggs! The French onion style soup is real great too.
On my way back a guy asks me to “lend” him 1.10 zł, no doubt to buy some beer. He figures we won’t meet again as I’m from Canada. All I know is that Bielsko-Biała is amazing, and I hope I make it back here some time. And when that happens I’ll be waiting for my złoty back, but I won’t charge any interest.
