Day 50 to 52 (July 28th - 30th) Arequipa,
After what seemed like an eternity on the bus (it was only 7 hours), and some 70īs Latin American crooners on the bus DVD (hard to believe there is something more annoying than Phil Collins) we arrived in Arequipa.
Arequipa is quite a large city, and more recently very touristy. It serves as a good base to do the Caņon del Colca (we are starting our 3 day trek of this tomorrow), has some great colonial architecture including the "Monasterio De Santa Catalina" (a 400 year old convent) which we spent a few hours visiting. It is spread over a whole block and is like a city within a city.
We sampled some of the local specialites, including ceviche (marinated fish & seafood), cuy choctao (grilled Guinea Pig) and stuffed spicy pepper.
