Day 214 Wednesday 01/06/05 Pantanal - Campo Grande - Foz Do Iguassu
The Belgian guy never surfaced for our sunrise walk!! We headed out at 5.30 for a couple of hours - the clouds obscured the sunrise and the lake the guide took us to wasnīt filled with birds as promised. BUT the noise of the morning birds was fabulous. Another group went to a different lake which was covered with birds - thatīs nature for you. We got back about 7.30 and found that there was no bread left for breakfast (everyone else apart from sunrise walkers had eaten) - they eventually found us a roll each and then the second group arrived from their sunrise walk to find nothing left. They just werenīt prepared for the 31 people that had arrived. After breakfast we made swamp necklaces using a section of the Cow-Shit-Nuts - whoever we give these to had better be impressed!!! After lunch (4 hours necklace making/resting/dozing) we retraced our steps with the truck/bus combo back to Campo Grande. We saw a giant anteater (closer this time and actually a good view through binoculars), another armadillo (so cute), wild pigs, wild deer, lots of capybara, emus, jubaru storks, grey herons, white herons, woodstorks, macaws a-plenty, toucans, kingfishers, gators, parrots, etc, etc. We saw more animals & birds leaving than we did in the camp - and we had no guide to tell us what some of the birds were. The minibus journey seemed to last for ever but we were treated to another electrical storm - again with lightning in 3/ 4 different places. It lasted for hours. We arrived in Campo Grande to find very heavy rain - our first rain since the start of New Zealand! We had a bite to eat with the Israelis before catching a night bus to Foz Do Iguassu at 10.20pm.
