One Thursday morning, we decided that we needed a holiday from all this traveling. It was getting to be exhausting. So, we took a big cruise-boat-like ferry boat over to Hvar Island and spent the next four days working on sun-tans and swimming in the Adriatic sea. The weather was absolutely perfect. Sunny, blue skies and 25-30 degrees C everyday and the water was clear and warm, much warmer than we'd expected! (Hvar is said to have 2724 hours of sunshine per year and the hotels all promise free stays if you ever see snow) We saw the smaller town, 'Stari Grad', but stayed in Hvar town. The cities and towns in this region have a similar vibe to them. The Venetian influence is strong from earlier eras and the 13th century traffic-free alley-like streets were a marvel to wander about in.

From there, we carried on to Korcula Island, where we had similar lazy experiences for 3 more days... Though, our first night, we did happen upon a huge party where the local 'Sword Dancers' were celebrating the end of the season. We heard their exuberant voices singing a mile away and followed our ears to an open door at the end of a square. Led by a dangerous accordion player, who appeared to be restling his squeeze-box-monster with all his might in attempt to keep volume, was a huge choir of joyful, proud drunks, all smiling and swinging beers. As soon as they saw us peering in, they dragged us in and started opening bottles for us! Later on I found myself 'chording my face off' trying to keep up with their local mandolin player... These guys,(and a couple of girls) sung their patriotic love songs with roaring lungs and they didn't stop for even a moment. One song seemed to run into the next. The only song that we recognized was 'Yellow Submarine', to which they only knew the chorus.
