SJ- another BB post. Big bus day. We'll be driving to Venice today stopping at Dachau and lunch in Munich. Not much to say about Dachau. Sort of a personal experience... Pretty grim as you might expect. I give the Germans a lot of credit for what must be some enormous effort and expense to keep the memory of some pretty shameful times alive. One of the predominant comments from the locals living around Dachau at the time goes something like, "How could we not have known what was going on in there?" As though there might have been something they could/would have done. It makes you think,"what would I have done if I had been witness to that?" Tough question. We had about an hour and a half to go through the very well detailed exhibit. It would have taken 3 or 4 hours to really doi it justice.
Back to the bus and on to Munich. We went to the Hoffbrau House for lunch. I order the white (vea) sausage and a Radler. Most of the beers in the place are only available in 1 litre mugs (YAY!). The Radler is described as "a light beer with lemonade". I'm thinking a big beer with a splash of lemon like you'd squeeze a lemon in to a Corona. What I got was a beverage that tasted like a 50/50 mix of beer and Sprite. Interesting. After I was reconciled to the fact that I could just slam this drink and order a rea beer, I decide it's rather refreshing and go with the flow. Don and Judy ordered the pork sausage. Which was actually served to me by mistake. Don and Judy sat there without any food for several minutes. By the time we diiscovered the mistake, I was almost finished with the pork sausage - delightful! -
I don't think the Kuglers were quite as content. Ah well, the perils of travel.
Back to the bus and on to Austria. Before leaving Germany, a note about the public toilets. The are mostly 'pay to play'. Typically .50 Euro. Once you get used to it (and after you spend any time in Italy) you'll come to appreciate that it is WELL worth the expense to have a clean facility with paper and a seat.
We arrived at our hotel in Pinswang Austria. It's quite a small little rural town nestled in the foothills of the Austrian Alps. Some of the most beautiful scenery yet. The soaring peaks are somewhat like home but the area must get a lot more rain. Ev erything is so lush and green. It's a beautiful, mostly sunny evening. We check in and have a couple of hours to ourselves. Another tiny room with a tiny bathroom. No biggy though. We don't need our rooms for anything but sleeping and we alway manage to get clean and successfully attend to our other business in the bathroom. Not much else is required. We take the opportunity to avail ourselves of the washing machines they have on site in a small cabin around the back. This place really is a converted old farm house in the country. Somehow hanging the wash on the line behind the hotel's restaurant becomes a perfectly enjoyable pastime and quite appropriate for our surroundings. What a gorgeous evening. Dinner that night was in the hotel restaurant. Best meal yet! It was a buffet offeringf various regional dishes. My favorite were a mac and cheese-like dish called spatzle, a stuffing-like dish made with cheese and roast pork with a very savory sauce.
... And the beer!
OYE!
Best beer yet. The brewery was Munchen Haus. I assume it's another Lager, but not sure. When I asked the fraulein what type of beer it is, she said "we call it a 'full beer'". Makes no sense to me but no doubt it would be better than anything labeled a 'half beer'.
And the best news so far...?
We stay here 2 nights.
Gutter aben.
