Woke up to a beautiful day in Austria!! On the agenda today is the Neuschwanstein Castle and the Luge.
We get started at 8:15 with a hike/walk to the castle. The path goes thru the woods and we cross back over to Germany at one point. There is a sign indicating we were entering Germany and an old guard shack. Now our walk has turned into a hike as we hiked up hill for quite awhile. This was nothing compared to once we got to the castle! Anyway the trail levels off and we stroll by a beautiful lake and shortly we arroive at the castle. Walt Disney modeled the Cinderella castle in Disney World after this one. After a short bathroom break it is on up the side of the mountain to the entrance of the castle. I don't think any amount of walking before the tour would prepare you for uphill walking for a good 45 min! To the top we made it and the castle is amazing. King Ludwig only finished one third of the castle before he died. Each room has a mural depicting a story and the wwodwork is just beautiful. This castle was for living in as compared to the Rhinefels castle in St Goar. King Lidwig also built a bridge behind the castle so he could look over the castle and the valley below. Another uphill climb but it was worth it. We walked 7 miles just in the morning! Back down the hill to the lake where Jennifer had a picnic lunch waiting for us. Steve stuck his feet in the water for a little bit.
On to the bus and the short drive to the Luge. We were fortunate for the good day,as with just a hint of rain and the Luge closes. We each got to go down twice....it was a lot of fun to go racing down the mountain, in the Alps!!!!
After returning to the hotel the afternoon was ours so we relaxesd on the little balcony for a tad and then headed downstairs for a beer.
Tomorrow (Sunday) we are headed to Italy and our first stop is Venice!!!!
I am sad that we haven't been able to include any pictures :( .... I think I have taken close to 200 so far but I won't hold you captive to look thru all of them!
