Guayaquil is really an awful place to be.  We had to spend one night there as we flew from Rio to Panama City and then on to Guayaquil.   Andy somehow managed to get business class tickets on Copa Air (Panama airline) for an incredibly cheap price, so those flights were very good.  We made use of the business class lounge between flights!  We got a taxi into town from the airport.  Taxis are very cheap here, as the petrol price is very cheap. It is 35 US cents a litre… about R2 a litre.  So for a couple of dollars (Ecuador uses US $ as its currency) you can go anywhere by taxi.  Our hostel was in the seedy part of town and we arrived on a public holiday in Guyaquil – so more traffic gridlocks and throngs of people! The traffic roared past our window all night.  They did have English TV but we couldn’t hear it with the noise outside!  The hostel was one of those that you just go through a door and up stairs straight away - about 3 floors with dark blue tiles on the narrow stairways. We went for a walk along the beachfront – the Malecon, and we seemed to be the only non-Ecuadorians. There was big celebration for the holiday and the president gave an address and then there was a fireworks display.  We watched a bit of the build up to the presidential address – live concert with lovely music and people all waving their flags to the music.  There was a big military and police presence.   Andy went to meet with the agent there who is handling our vehicle, and we will have to wait longer than expected.  He was very helpful and friendly, and organized a friend of the family to drive us to Salinas.
