Where I stayed
Chemainus river campground
Crossed by ferry today from the USA onto Vancouver Island, Canada in very misty, drizzly conditions, but it was lovely. Our Bakkie was the first off the ferry! The ferry comes right into a little cove in the centre of Victoria, Inner Harbour....Gorgeous..... Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, has such a colonial feel....so different to where we have been.
We gathered necessary info, changed money and headed out on the Trans Canada Highway. Found a quiet campsite at Chemainus. Tomorrow we are going back into Victoria to explore....
Friday/ Saturday... 1/2June
Spent a great day in Victoria sightseeing from the hop-on-hop-off red bus. Such a beautiful city with grand old buildings. Everything has an English feel, even the roads are often named after the British royal family
Today, being Saturday, we visited the Butchart Gardens. It is rated in the top 10 gardens in the world, and it was stunning. Even Andy was in awe. It is such a well-run concern, starting from the moment you enter. There must have been about 12 people guiding the parking, all with their 2-way radios. Attendants were notified that our big vehicle(they quickly measured it!) was coming, and they set aside a place for us. All over the gardens are little hammocks holding umbrellas in case of rain, and baby buggies for public use. Even the top of the litter bins are planted with beautiful flowers. Andy heard a group of trainees being briefed, and the instructions were basically: smile, help, don't ever stand around, find something to clean/do..... The garden was established over 100 years ago and is visited by over a million people each year. Our timing was just right for the spring flowers... The rose garden was just about to bloom...and we got there before the tour busses started pouring in. Kirstenbosch, as beautiful as it is, could learn a lot....I have never seen such an amazingly well-maintained garden. Smoking was banned in the garden!
We are now camped along the beach near Nanaimo, the 2nd biggest town on the Island, in The Living Forest.
We have a view of the harbour, where huge logs are being rounded up by tug- like boats, and sea- planes are landing and taking off. We have been in the sunshine for an hour or so....BLISS...
