It seems bizarre to me that it's been a while year since I was here... yet things are different, just like they always are when I come back. The girls aren't really living here anymore. Their stuff is, and they came to town for the fest, but they left even before it was over, on another tour. And the Ranch has been without a roommate for months! It's quite shocking. Yet it was good for me because I actually got my own room! For the first time in the history of me being a Ranch dweller I wasn't sleeping on the floor in the living room! It was super fantastic. I know I won't be as lucky next year and this is sad, as I have tasted the good life and I won't want to go back!
So the Ranch is really quiet right now. Christie was away during the fest and the rest of the time works 9-5. David has left for Scotland because his grandma died. So more than ever I've been alone here. Well, except for Simon. Simon is my Columbia boyfriend. I was overjoyed when he started sleeping on the box I constructed for him with a brite green fake fur piece. I tried to get him to sleep on it last year to no avail. You should have seen my face when that cat climbed up and snuggled into the neon fluff...
Despite an exhorbitant amount of tech errors the fest went superbly. The attendence when from 6,600 to 10,600! A crazy gross and I think David and Paul are a little bewildered. There were few famous people (although NOT Al Paccino as the rumour went...) and once again lots of music and parties... I think it's quite incredible the music before screenings and the special programs they do.
Columbia was feeling a little like Rochester this year. I don't know why. It was they wooded areas that are still dead from winter and the bright yet weak sunlight.
The house was very very cold when I first got here. It felt like my room wasn't getting any heat. They have the heat turned down to 55 yet are still getting $500 heating bills. I think it's all the windows. I try and open the shades in the day and close them at night. Funny thing is that the last two days have been in the 70's. This weather is crazy. And it's so not normal.... It's weird my father doesn't believe in Climate Change. He says things like it's just a weather phase. Well whatever it is it's PROBLEMATIC! So can we just stop arguing over which scientists are correct and try and DO something about it??
Anyhow... this year there were True/False banners up on some light poles. Very flash, very exciting. I guess there is a little bit of controversy because the Columbian Downtown Assocation (or the like) paid for most of it but they have a history of not being kind to homeless people. I only found this out recently through Christie. Also, T/F has "partnered" with Current TV - AL Gore's TV station. I didn't think much about this until a projectionist told me the way Current works is this: you upload your movie and they get to keep it. It's theirs. If you are lucky they will see your film and think it's good and pay you money for it.
So well other than that things are the same here in ol' CoMo. Lots of bands playing out, although very little I want to see. David says the punk scene is at a low point. I asked a dude about FNB and house shows and neither are really happening.
I saw Gabe for a total of 3 minutes here and there - I wanted to ask him about the peanuts comic Lane drew of him 10 years ago. I want to know if he's seen it lately and what he thought of it. I think it's the funniest thing...
I have to tell this story because it's frickin hilarious. So there's this boy that works downtown who I find strangely attractive. He's got this weird ass face and round belly. Apparently, because dishelved portly boys are now considered sexy (there is no equivilant in females of course :( ) he is a boy that girls are swooning over. I believe he knows this and plays up to it. So JX tells me this story which I found really funny and I love her for it. She's a party in the bathroom going pee. She's completely sober. Some one is banging on the door, wanting to get in. She tells them she is in there peeing. The banging persists. She is angry and opens the door. It is funny face man. She lets him and asks "What are you doing in here" and he says "I don't know". She finishes peeing. Then she starts kissing him. Then she bends down and starts opening his zipper with her teeth... then she LEAVES! I picture this boy, who thinks he's hot shit, being left alone with his fly undone wondering what the fuck that was all about...
Well anyway... Columbia really hasn't changed much since I left it. The Ranch is always changing and most likely I won't have a minute to myself next year when I come back. One thing is for sure tho, David will be here and the carpets will be filthy and I will always be welcome...

There was a game show this year with a video introduction by Alex Tribek. These kids just have funniest connections! Columbia was feeling a little like Rochester this year. I don't know why. It was they wooded areas that are still dead from winter and the bright yet weak sunlight.

the happy couple
What kind of shite is this??? This is so wrong it's not funny. I need to talk to David about that... Ragtag Microcinema is starting to play bigger films for a longer runnng time. This is a little upsetting to me. Matchpoint played for like the whole month. I wouldn't have minded if it had been GOOD! And they are giving a film called Duma a week and a half. Duma is about a kid and a cheetah. I'm not joking. It's disturbing to me. I want to ask Paul about this...So well other than that things are the same here in ol' CoMo.
