When we last left off Siue was eating junk food on the bus pulling out from the god forsaken station in New Haven... shaking off the memory of a green falafel from 8 months previous, she pulls into NYC at 9:30 at night.
Josh and Renate were pure saints for letting me stay, and even come early. I DID go to the wrong apartment and knock on two wrong doors, but the Brooklyners were really friendly and so it wasnt so bad...
J and R have just come from their one year tour of the Americas. And they've just dived into school and law... You can read their amazing travel journal in the link somewhere below. Josh also has a what do vegans eat webpage for all you people who haven't been convinced we eat pretty much the same as you...
I took the extra time in NY to shoot the kid's carosel that i tried to 8 months previous. It was quite beat up since the last time I saw it, a year ago, but I just got the footage back and it looks pretty good.
I don't think I will ever spell carosel correctly...
I really tried to not focus my trip on food this time, but it was not to be. There's just some super fine grub in that town...
We finally ate at Angelic Cafe or whatever the hell it's called and it was expensive and the food came MUCH too soon but it still was tasty. There was a pear coffee cake with sauce that was pretty delish and the pumpkin pie was big and thick - tho not sweet enough.
I don't think I'll go back.
I also ate for the first time at Vegetarian Paradise II. Had Ham and Collard spring rolls. Tasty. i was sick that day, walking around in the rain, trying to find lunch and for some reason I could not find a decent place to eat in the middle of NYC! I was so happy when I stumbled across the place...
I found out that the company who makes the amazing vegan pb and chocolate (white and plain) has a cafe front there. $5 for a fluffer nutter (not vegan) sandwich. Still, it was pretty exciting to be there. Across the way was a vegan restaurant that had yummy desserts such as macaroons and fudge brownies.
Burritoville, i think I can say now, is my favourite burrito joint. They just win me over with their tempeh, soy sour cream and soy cheese.
So there's this magazine Satay or something
(please excuse the hap hazard writing of these entries. I should be doing some research but that would require getting out of bed...)
that Joshua P writes for - a veg*n mag from Brooklyn. They interviewed this one woman who does Vegan Treats and they showed a picture of her working on these AMAZING looking cakes. I HAD to try her concoctions but the mag didn't say where to get the stuff and her website was down. Luckily, Food Swings in Williamsburg had her cake - the Peanutbutter Mousse Bomb cake that was featured in the magazine... Patti and I went to eat there and catch up with each other. The girl is going back to Canada when she's done school so mounties and libraries better watch it! Anyway, Patti ate fish and chips (the fish stix were SUPER fishy!) and i had buffalo wings with bleu cheese dressing and mac and cheese. Lord knows how they made that amazing dressing! There were left overs... the cake was chocolate with these big rounds of pb mousse on top and in the center - all covered with chocolate. Wow wowowwowowowow Josh and Renate got a bit of leftovers too. Later I bought a whoopie pie that she made for Atlas Cafe, thinking it was vanilla creme inside, only to find it was peanutbutter. So I decided to give it to this guy here in PDX, figuring it was pretty much like the cake I ate, but he never even told me how it was, fucker. I should have eaten it myself... :/
Ate more nuts from a street nut vendor. Man those things rock. You have to get a mix and you have to get chunks of coconut in with it. Yummers.
I went to the transit museum at grand central station because it was free anad they were showing clips from films that starred the NY transit. Lots of stuff I never noticed before. And Mamulian's Applause looks totally amazing!
gosh sorry about all the spelling mistakes.
I also went to the lower east side tenant museum. It was pretty cool - saw a apartment from the early hundreds and then another from the 1935. The guide talked about gentrification and so forth - it was really neat to get that pursective from touristy thing. The building itself was really amazing. I some spots that had like seven layers of wallpaper! The wood was gorgeous too...
I went to the film form and saw Soy Cuba. Weird but I didn't remember that I'd seen the first 2 stories in that movie on tv. I'm so bad with names and directors and all that... I'll say I haven't seen something, I'll even read the dvd cover, but then pop it in and I'll be like "OH yeah! I saw that with so and so four years ago!" Anyway, it's a good film , see it in a theatre if you can...
I went over to Dave and Robyn's and heard their little Andrew crying in the next room. That was the closest I got to seeing the little guy. sigh. They use these amazing hemp diapers that Democracy Now (Dave's work) bought them. Jen was talking about little Andrew's ass being huge because of the double thick night time ones. Despite their apartment being utterly spic and span they have a terrible mouse problem. I couldn't believe the stories. One involved Robyn catching a mouse mid thievery of hershey's kisses. He's got a kiss in his mouth and he jumps out of the bag, runs across the room, under the door, the hershey is too big to fit under, it rolls away, he pauses, goes back to get it and runs off! They are going to move...
The last day I was there Josh and I biked around the lower east side and east village. Biking new york was so much fucking fun! So good bye to those expensive passes! Renate's bike rocked my world, making me wonder if Stanley had been a bad choice. Her bike was light and very comfy... we visited his school - New School - where the teachers are hip. We tried to sell some cds on St. Marks - they wouldn't have it - shitters. We ate knishes (my first!), egg rolls, and I found a wheat free vegan bakery! What a score! I hope she stays open... I got a burritoville for the plane ride back.
Josh took me to the Parkslope food coop in Brooklyn, aparently the oldest and biggest inthe country? I REALLY took offense to the set up (can not enter unless a member or with a member. You have to sign in. You stand in these really long lines where the person scans your items then you go stand in another long line to pay and then you have to show your receipt to someone before you leave. I haven't a clue how people are happy with this) but the prices were pretty great and their selection was good and there were all kinds of different people shopping there. From there I raced to get to the airport (it costs an extra $5 from the subway stop! Who knew! Idiots!) to find my plane was late. I expected it with all the travel problems I'd been having... When I got to PDX i had to wait fucking half and hour before the max train pulled away. Then another 20 minutes for the yellow line. Took me and hour and half to get home. It was raining. I was miserable. But when I got on the yellow line who should be in my car? ALL my roommates! Hil fucking arious...
Portland has now started the rainy season. I am biking in the rain. I am not happy. Even with clothing that somewhat protects me from the rain. Stanley, after being meticulously cleaned and adjusted while I was gone has decided to become a gimp. His back wheel is causing me not to be able to ride him. Again, not happy.
Marc Moscoto is working at Microcosm now, it's pretty funny. We also have an intern for the month from the east. Her highschool makes the seniors take a month off and do virtually whatever they want. She is super sweet and mature for your 17 years.
Me I got projects. And other projects itching my attention. And maybe some archiving work? the cook book needs attending. Gotta do the DIYPDX website (gotta find someone to help)... gotta watch fucking MOVIES! Gotta edit my OWN...
I like traveling by myself. I can do whatever the hell I want without consulting someone. But I'm getting to the point where it's a little lonely and I want to be able to enjoy it with someone. I hope that happens soon. Webly mentioned wanting to go to Chicago... I haven't been there in 12 years...
