Well, as I've found out, I'm even worse at keeping in touch with a 9-5 job. I've got about 60 unread messages in my account. I've read most from you all, but just haven't had time to respond. It's literally work eat sleep and maybe if I see a friend in town the eating and sleeping part are cut short. Sometimes I'm kinda glad I don't have many friends in the city. I'd spend all my money eating out, seeing movies and have even less time keeping in touch with friends who aren't here.
I've barely seen Ben, seen Jonathan a few times and spending most of my social time with Carla. THere's been two good punk shows (the scene is so looking up!) and of course the film festivals in this city could keep any cinephile watching eating sleeping for months. It's really weird how MANY festivals are going on during April and May. We are talking like 6 big/exciting ones - it's a little mind boggling. I've seen only two screenings at Images (the indepedent/"experimental" fest). Jonathan and I went to Salt of the Earth - during the Jack Layton film fest (He's the head of the left wing party in Canaduh. Embarrassing and rather lame for him to have a festival of films he doesn't even program himself). Unforutnately they were screening a VIDEO/DVD made from a bad print, on a not so hot projector with bad sound. For $10. We asked for our money back, went to the indie video store Suspect to look it up and they had it... and it was on loan. Man was I pissed. This is what film culture has come to. You can charge $10 and show something on DVD and not even TELL peope it's not a FILM screening. Carla!
Carla!
We are writing a letter ;)
I'm having much fun with my "roommates". G is 11 and super smart and totally a riot. She and her friend were making a digestive system for science class. They used a piece of sandpaper covered with a red balloon for the tongue - totally ingenious! G would explain where the "anus" and "rectum" would go with complete sincerity while her friend giggled at every mention of the words.
The temp is warming up and it's totally biking weather. I've been bother Carla, Kathy and Jonathan to get their damn bikes out there. Toronto is a total biking town and we always need more to represent!
I finally saw Jonathan's feature film masterpiece Grilled Cheese Sandwich and it's of course brilliant. If you see a poster for ol' JC coming through your town you really must go to the screening. Prepare for high humour, (very) low humour and an amazing amount of fun...
Helen is back in town! I haven't read her travelpod in a month or so. It will be good to catch up and get the stories and see her excellent pictures in person.
Carla and I have gone to a couple vegan potlucks. It's kind of a sad scene. Everyone there is coupled off, older or incredibly annoying. Or maybe just slightly annoying. I've discovered that I have only a bit of patience with new people I meet who I can't see ever hanging out with. After eating I could just leave right then and there. I want to hang out with punk rockers. I find the vegan people either dull or their politics piss me off. It's funny really - when I first got into activism it was for the animals. Now I'm EXTREMELY cautious about those people. I've kind of lost respect for animal activism because 90% of the time it leaves out HUMAN suffering and repression. It just doesn't make the links (a favourite saying of mine since my friend Michele co-edited a book called Making the Links like 10 years ago). This vegan singer entertaining us at one pot luck totally shocked and angered me when he said "hey! Who voted for the green party in the last election!? Alright!" The fucking Green party here is being run by a fucking nazi! Hello!? argh!!!!!!!!!!
Well... there's probably more to write but I've got to get outside because I get no light here in my basement. Hope you are all well and enjoying spring...
