I do, however, feel a little embarrassed about being hetro! Because by the end of the week it was obvious that EVERY single person working/volunteer in the office is queer. They didn't ASK me my orientation during the interview but they knew I had a film in one year ("Pussy Palace Panty Picket Protest" done with Jonathan) and I've attended the fest previously. And they asked about that a couple times. It's not a big deal obviously... but it's funny because at some point it's going to come out and I'm sure they will be just a LITTLE bit disappointed! I feel totally ok with it tho because I feel like I'm an ally enough that's it's not "weird" being there. I like the fact that my friend from school Jen had to ask about me being homo/hetro because she just couldn't tell. I was going to the LGBT moving image archivist's group and always talking to her about the gay scene in Rochester and so forth. Personally, I think I'm VERY passable as a dyke (although none have really hit on me )
I went to Lisa's wedding on Saturday
Toronto. What a fucking place. What other city's mere TWO DIY punk/hc shows on the radio programmed at the same fucking time!? Geezus! I keep meaning to complain (for like 5 years) but to who? And fucking Toronto. Seems like it's STILL only about: drunk punks and stupid old scenesters. What is it about T.O. where local bands are fuckers that are reveled in the scene outside Canada? WHY are our bands lead by racists/homophobes or are friends with homophobes? Why is it normal to get a black eye at a show? Get hit in the head with a mic, beat up by the guitar player? God! I can't believe how much shit hasn't changed...
You can count on the food tho... that is a given at least for a while. This is the only city that you can pig out on good vegan food and not empty half your bank account. Yeah to that. I've been sticking to old standards and new pickings from China town as I haven't had much time to cook. Homemade organic icecream for a buck? $2 falafels? Veggie dogs on the street carts? Vegan baked goods at every single healthfood store? Soy icecream at corner stores? It's all here dude. If I was an eating machine there would be no reason to leave...
I went to Lisa's wedding on Saturday
Ben
. It was my first lesbian wedding. It kinda capped my notion that I've been living in this alternaUniverse. I am no longer with my parnter of 5 years, I'm not living at the Clinton house, there's strange stores in Kensington Market, Ben is kind of depressed and jaded, TTC is fucking $2.50, hipsters no longer recognize/acknowledge me, a member of the deceased Pretty Porky and Pissed Off is about a 1/4 of her original size, I have a 9-5 job at the beautiful 401 building, not many of my friends are making an effort to get in touch... At the wedding I knew barely ANYONE. Patti and Jeff came from NY and we spent the whole time with Charlotte and Urling (sp?) discussing the fact that we were the only "old school Lisa crew" left, we didn't know anyone else, a bunch of friendships had broken up etc. But the actual wedding itself was pretty sweet and Lisa and Vicki looked really really happy and beautiful. And Lisa is finally going to get to go to Paris...
