Another trip to New York... another eating vacation... another crash with grand hosts Dave and Robyn.
This time I swore I was going to see some art and finally a did! Went to the International Centre for Photography and saw some awesome stuff including Whiteness and Race in Contemporary Art (basically pointing out white privilage), Ralph Euegene Meatyard (what a strange name) who posed and photographed friends and neighbours in Lexington Kentucky wearing masks in 50's to 70's, and Bill Owen's Leisure series which is my favourite and you will be able to see why by looking at the picture included. Fucking hilarious. He has other collections like "Suburbia" which also just poke fun of middle class white people.
I tried to go to the Museum of Cartoon and Comic Art two times but it didn't work out. I finally saw Bunel's Los Olvidados at the Film Form (yippee!) which was spectcular
I visited Dave at his Democracy Now Archive which was really neat... I visited Paper Tiger TV who put together activist broadcasts and have a really great office packed to the ceiling with 3/4" tapes. Dave is trying to get Indymedia people to recognize the need for archiving... There's a big Indymedia conference happening in Austin (EVERYTHING is in Austin this year man!) and they are going to discuss this. This woman from Indymedia Housten put the idea in my head that perhaps I should do my little punk/activist/diy film archive through an Indy Media...
Food... of course... I tried to be a good grrrl and eat lots of healthy things, I'm into the "live" food recently and there is plenty in NYC. But also, one can not survive on sprouted flax chips and walnut pate alone... one must need doughnut sustenance right? So off to the Donought Factory I went to get some organic, yummy, expensive fried dough. They were really good...
No visits to ABC or Tiny's Giant Sandwhichs this time but I bought a punk ass belt at Moo Shoes...
Robyn and I had a little baking night where I made some chocolate caramel buns but I didn't put enough sugar inside, baked them too high, and then the rest is probably in the garbage because they weren't baked within 24 hours! It's a good recipe tho and will easily be improved and be tres tasty...
Robyn is 4 months pregnant and her class of kindergardens have finally noticed there's something a little different about her... "There's a baby in there!!"
