"I like the wild, just not at 7 o'clock in the morning! There's a time and a place!"
Camping is slowly but surely growing on Sophie. But it did take me by suprise to see an animal lover, who has spent alot of time doing volunteer work, shouting and threatening kiwi wildlife for making noise. We returned from Milford Sound and continued up North. Queenstown is known as a bit of a party town over here, but it's also pretty damn nice, so we spent a few days there. Pretty relaxed, some great views, and some great weather. I managed to catch up with Tim Highley, who I know mainly from my 6th form Math classes and our pool and table tennis matches. In school we had to write 'self-evaluations' every few months: "I feel I am good at trignometric fractions, but could improve my study if I paid more attention and was less of a wanker, etc." Tim and another guy used to give each other words to work in to the evaluations to make it less boring. Last I remember he was trying to slip the word 'bicycle-pump' in.
Anyway, he's good and has pretty much emigrated out here. Not for life though. I think he's on a mission to get as many country citizenships as possible. He believes the maximum is 6. In Queenstown I also got to see my first real Kiwi bird. After 7 months. They're nocturnal and pretty rare, so we went to a Kiwi and Birdlife Park, where they have them set up in a dark room. Real funny looking things with a great run. Tim was telling us one of them got kidnapped recently. They found him wandering the streets shortly afterwards and took him back. Possibly realised he couldn't afford to do anything decent in this country. We carried on up north stopping at Puzzle World in Wanaka. It has some pretty cool stuff. One of those leaning rooms. And a hall of faces and some other impressive illusions. They also have an outdoor maze which gets old as quick as every other outdoor maze I've ever been in. The secret to success is to follow the signs for 'Emergency Exit'.
We tried to continue our drive up north. We had real trouble finding our way out of Wanaka. A very puzzling town indeed. More thumbnails ...
