Hop On The Bus, Gus
Entry 39 of 84 | show all | print this entry |
"Most Kiwis get their driving license at 15. If you meet a 17 year old without one it's probably because hes lost it."
This past weekend was my last chance to use my 2 day trip to the Coromandel before I head south. This is the trip I won in a pool competition a couple of months ago, from one of those hop-on/hop-off backpacker buses which operate all over the place. There's three big ones:
"The Kiwi Experience" is probably the biggest and usually avoided by people of my generation (the generation that brought you 'C+C Music Factory', 'ThunderCats' and 'The Lost Boys'). They're usually full of 18 year old English lads whose sunglasses and shoes cost more then everything I own. You'll also find young English girls on a gap year who have borrowed a few grand from their parents to travel round-the-world getting laid. The Kiwi Experience is often referred to as "The Shaggin' Wagon", "The Bang Bus", "The Fuck Truck", or my favourite which I believe was invented by a Canadian guy I met a while ago: "The Vagina Experience".
"Stray Bus" would be my kind of genre. I don't really want to use one of these Backpacker buses to travel round N.Z. just yet, but if I did I would use Stray. Maybe the South Island.
Then there's "Magic Bus". For some reason I always picture this as full of losers. Whenever I see one drive by it always looks really boring. This is the bus tour I won. Perhaps it's fate reminding me I'm a boring loser.
There was only 6 of us on it and it was actually pretty cool. The tour guide, Wade, was a real nice guy, real knowledgable, and I was very impressed. Definitely made me view Magic in a different light.
The weather was absolutely beautiful, especially considering we're in the middle of winter. We got down to a few beaches which were absolutely idyllic. One of them, Cathedral Cove, was a 30 minute walk through forest and well worth it. Sheer paradise.
I also did a bit of bone carving and made a delightful necklace. A Maori girl had told me it's bad luck to make one for yourself so I made it with someone else in mind. She has since told me she was full of shit, but it's too late...Fliss, it's on its way to you.
Stayed in a backpackers in Whitianga called 'Cats Pyjamas', which was the bee's knees. It was great. If it wasn't for the cats it would be fantastic. The owners were sound and it was all very homely. The highlight was definitely these gorgeous German identical twins who were staying there. Possibly the best looking girls I have ever seen. Unreal. Really friendly and real nice company too. One of them gave the other one a massage and I think that's about when I blacked out.
Got back to Auckland the next morning. I'd hardly call that a 2 day trip. I probably would have felt a bit ripped off if I'd paid for it. Now I'm staying at a friends house and have a few extra days at work before I properly head south. Brian and Ciara (the Bazzerazzi) are in town too so that's cool. As always it's great to see them, unless they're spying on me trying to get a big scoop. The other day Bri said, "I rejigged my bag the other day...threw out a few garments." For some reason I thought that was hilarious. I think it's the use of the words 'rejigged' and 'garments'.
