"Did chocolate bars get smaller or have we just gotten bigger?"
As the Maori say, "Hakuna Matana from New Zealand!" (Actually, that's from The Lion King. I think the Maori say 'Kia-Ora', which is a good sign). Yes, I have arrived in Auckland, also know as The City Of 100 Lovers (a lot of pressure).
It had always been my intention to come over to New Zealand to work after Oz, but I wasn't 100% sure it would happen because you have to apply for your work visa before you leave home, and less then a year before you get here...which wasn't possible. So I called upon the legend that is Alex Jackson to help me out, knowing he has always looked after me. He said it was no problem to be the middle man, and also asked if I needed anyone killed, so that was a good sign. It was only after I sent my passport to him in England that I remembered the time he threw my shoes out the window, the time he got me thrown out of a nightclub in Vegas, the many times he nearly killed me in his car, the mutual downfall of our Computing A-Levels, and countless other worrying moments. Nevertheless, he of course came through in the end, surviving a ridiculous feud with the British Postal system, and bam...I had my visa.
New Zealand is split in to 2 islands, much like the Palace Nightclub was split in to two floors (before it became a snooker hall). I had to decide where to start: Do I go upstairs where it's darker therefore increasing my chances of pulling some girl from D.I.T., since they can't see I'm a munter? Or do I go downstairs where you don't have to dance, again increasing my chances of some loving? In the end I picked the North Island. I know that's totally unrelated to The Palace story, but I just got a bit nostaligic.
It was a very unique feeling flying over here: By myself, with very little money and not really knowing what was going to happen. As my plane began its descent I was treated to what I think is the most impressive view from a plane landing I have ever seen: A sudden drop through the clouds to reveal green (been far too long) hills and fantastic bays of shadowed water. Just phenomenal. Immigration were just as welcoming, although they pointed out that I'd never get in to America with the state of my passport, so something will have to be done about that!
Since my arrival I have been living in a hostel and managed to start a well paying job on my 3rd day. I was working in the offices of a large bank, and obviously it was crap. I won't get in to my usual grievances with offices...if you wanted to know about a bunch of moany retnab munters complaining how they have so much work and not realising how easy office jobs are then I'm sure you could just look around your own place of work.
I will just point out one (of several) ridiculous points of this particular office, which I have never seen before: Every morning a guy comes round with a box full of pieces of paper. You pick one, and it tells you one word which is a suggestion for your office attitude for the day. Yesterday, mine was 'Devoted', and today 'Delightful'. This is one of the most ridiculous practices I have ever seen. Some people seem to appreciate it though; the woman next to me had 'Bitchy Munter Who Looks Like She Woke Up On The Wrong Side Of A Lemon' written on hers every day I was there.
Realising yet again that offices make me miserable, I made a vow never to work in one again (unless it's needed to provided for a family). So, I have taken a pay cut of biblical proportions and gotten a new job in.....wait for it.....
A TOY STORE! I have fulfilled one of my lifelong dreams. Should be good, although it will be hard to resist buying stuff.
Living in a hostel has been wicked, but I need to move out. I'd like to say it's because I need my own space, but I probably don't. It's because The Lions Tour is going to make it more expensive, and because I'm spending far too much money going on the piss with my constantly changing roommates. Met some really wicked people in my room, including a honeymooning couple, a girl who got stripsearched at Auckland airport, a guy who just found out his dad won the lottery, a James Jackson lookalike and various others. It's a mixed dorm, and myself and a couple of the lads had been awaiting the arrival of Girls Aloud. No luck as of yet, but still some really cool girls, so far none of which have been munters.
But enoughs enough, I'm moving in to a share house next week. Hopefully then I can start getting my money back in shape, enough to travel around the north island in August. In the meantime there seems to be a lot of people I know passing through this way, and I might take a few weekend breaks. Also, I've seen nothing of Auckland except for a few bars, so something is going to have to be done about that. I won a 2 day trip in a pool competition the other day, so it's all good!
The theme of this entry is 'Munters'.
