! we ended up back on the101, dam GPS did not want us anywhere near the coast! Stopped at a service station and went old school with a map, much more successful, found the name of another town put that in and after a long windy trip round the mountains we found ourselves almost back to Carmel lol, but we found the beach road and in the process saw a lot of very unique countryside which we wouldn't normally have seen, so there was a plus side. That probably added about 2 hours to the trip, but worth it as the coast road was unbelievably beautiful, though in places the road had me a bit worried, very narrow and windy in places. Stopped at Ragged Point Inn overnight, very pretty place, had a very luxurious room overlooking the ocean, with a spa and a fireplace! The room was enormous and only $119 per night, (plus tax of course). Set out again at 8am Tuesday for Vegas, David would not let me drive until we got off the coast rode, male chauvinist didn't think i could handle it, but as soon as we were off that road, we stopped at the next rest stop and swapped, then i ended up driving almost to Vegas, just giving him back the wheel at a rest stop about 1 1/2 hours out, handled the driving well even if i do say so myself. And speaking of rest stops Australia could learn something from the yanks - big rest stops, really clean seemingly in the middle of nowhere, with vending machines selling cold drinks, hot drinks and ice creams, australians could also learn a few road manners from the yanks as well, found all the drivers very courteous, especially the truck drivers, can't say the same about drivers on our roads! Got to Vegas at 4:30, just in time to check in and then remembered i had to call tour operator about out tour pickup time tomorrow, lucky i did as voucher said pickup from7.30 and we are getting picked up at 6.15 so after an eventful 2 days an early night tonight, going to the big hole in the ground tomorrow.
Left 9am Monday morning to pick up car, which luckily the avis office was right behind our hotel. After some mucking around with 2 GPS which didn't work, the lady at the office rung Budget who had one we could use, so round to Budget which was close by to pick that up and finally underway shortly after10. Got into the wrong lane going over Bay Bridge and ended up halfway back, but we got to Treasure Island, not much to see there though, so after a stop to unfrazzle and a chat with one of the natives we were on our way again, and this time managed to stay in the right lane and made our way off the bridge!!!! Realising we were on highway 101 and not highway 1 which we wanted to go on, we set the GPS for the only coastal town i could remember the name of - Carmel, lovely little town, only remembered that as Clint was mayor there, didn't run into him though :( but a lovely little town all the same, we stopped there for lunch had a wander on the beach, and set off again thinking this time we had it right, set the GPS again and it looked like it was going down the coast- WRONG!!!
