Where I stayed
First thing walked the length of the waterfront, picked up our tickets for Alcatraz, hot dog and corn dog for breakfast which was delicious. Then hopped on the red topless bus, (as in no roof) and went out to Golden Gate bridge, walked across, took about half hour to walk at a leisurely pace, interesting fact - on average 1 person per week jumps off this bridge, every 100 ft or so there is a helpline phone, also interesting there are big wire fences on the parts of the bridge that are over land - but when you get to the part over water - none! Perhaps they just don't want to clean up the mess on land?
Picked up the bus again on the other side, through to Sausalito, where we were told that 70% of the people who work there can't afford to live there. another interesting piece of info is that Sausalito has about 5,000 population, but the marina has about 7,000 boats, then back to Fisherman's Wharf just in time to walk back down to where we picked up the boat for Alcatraz
Alcatraz was amazing hearing all the stories told by former guards and inmates via the audio tour.
It was a long trek up to the cell block from the dock via a winding road, up a hill equivalent to a 13 storey building, not for the feint hearted but well worth the effort.
Was a great view back towards san fran as well, glad we did the night tour, though there wasn't enough time to just wander, would still recommend it.
After we got back walked back towards hotel down waterfront again, and found a great little place to eat, Chowders , neither of us game enough to actually try the chowder, but they did a really nice fish and chips.
By the time we ate and stopped at Walgreens for a few supplies 10:30pm!!!
A very full but enjoyable day
