Oct 17, 2007

Paul got in yesterday and seems to be acclimating quite well. To his credit, and in his usual style, he slept most of the way here (I wish I could sleep on planes like he does). He usually gets into his seat and within seconds is out like a light. I usually get into my seat; get settled after 10 minutes or so; get really sleepy and begin to bob my head; finally give up and embrace the snooze-only to wake up once the engines rev up and I'm awake from that moment on.

So today we got up at around 8:30. We went for coffee at a coffee shop not far from the hotel that is right by the metro stop so it is great people watching. It's funny to look at people and imagine what they must have said to themselves when they looked at the mirror just before walking out El Greco's Prince and Page
El Greco's Prince and Page
. I wonder if they'll think the same at the end of the day when they take a second look at themselves!

We eventually made it to the Louvre. Where, as Paul says, "There was a bunch of crap and a few great things!" We loved the El Greco paintings and the Mona Lisa (we think it was her, but she was so far away and the crowds so large that it was hard to get a good view. I'm hoping my camera cropping is going to do the job-you tell me. I was really surprised at the large number of people even on a Wednesday in October. We had lunch at the cafeteria there and it was actually not a bad place to eat (as had been suggested to us).

From there we headed out to the Jewish section of town and I showed Paul the infamous falafel place (which had on one in line today!). We sat for coffee somewhere on a little side street and then went to the Picasso Museum. What a joy that was! Whew! It is phenomenal. The sheer genius and talent of the man envelops every room. Magnificent.

Now we are taking an nap to prepare for dinner at a restaurant we found on our journeys this afternoon. I'll report on that tomorrow.

Have a good night,

Jorge
PS--Dinner was phenomenal...foie gras, mushroom soup, pork, sea bass...it was a feast!
