Where I stayed
Breakfast at the hotel and then we headed down to the port to take a tram to Jeramias Monastery. Paul thought it was kinda "dead"--unlike some other monasteries we've visited, but that's because this one is mostly a museum and no longer a real monastery. I still appreciated it immensely I thought that the architecture is one of the best I have ever seen.
On the way out we made our way into the church where Vasco de Gama is buried. Now, for Paul this was the first time he'd even heard the name. I became quite aware that the quality of education growing up differs among us all
Oh, well. We then made it "across the street" to the river and the Discoveries Monument. I've always wanted to see this one live and it is quite impressive. Its sheer size is pretty breathtaking.
Next we walked to view the Belem Tower. Didn't climb and just took a look at it from afar.
On our way home we decided to have lunch. Paul had a rice and octopus rice and I had a cod. Both were quite salty--not enough to not eat, but very close to it. We walked quit a bit (over 12,000 steps today!).
This evening was Fado and dinner. Bot were OK. We decided that for the remainder of the time in Portugal we're going to eat local and stop trying to have a foodie experience--I think this is a smart move.
Tomorrow we drive to Fatima and on to Port. From there on Friday we'll go in search of the abandoned Farias castle.
We'll check in and give you an update on Friday evening (our time).
Have a great end of the week!
