What I did
Edinburgh Festival Fringe

I'm writing this blog after the fact as I didn't have time to blog while at the Fringe Festival . . . just thought I'd catch you up on the vacation that I shall henceforth refer to as the "Sweet and Sour Tour."  This specific part of the blog is the sweet part of the tour.  See "Anacortes Revenge" for the sour part.

Six days; 25 shows; 12 delicious meals and various trips to the pub for scotch tasting--and an experience of a lifetime.  We visited Edinburgh last year on our 3 week Scottish driving excursion that took us from Skye to Portpatrick to Dumfries and many points in-between.  We decided then that 2 days to experience the Festival were hardly enough so we had every intention to return this year.  In the meantime, we made a commitment to go camping on the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington state during (what turned out to be the second week of our two-week vacation) the week of Aug 20th.  So it looked like it was not going to work out for us to do both.  "Are you crazy?  We can't fly from Edinburgh to Seattle to go camping!"  But as the time got closer we couldn't bear the thought of missing the Festival.  So we threw caution to the wind and decided that we wouldn't let good judgment get in the way of a good time.  So we booked our flights, made hotel reservations and studied the catalog-thick Festival program in anticipation of maximizing our knowledge of what was available and what looked interesting.

I found it helpful to study the program, but when it came down to it, what served us best was the mobile app.  Each morning we awoke and had breakfast.  During that time we'd make our initial picks.  Then, during the day we would use the app to find the shows in the area coming up next.  With the use of the app we were able to attend 25 shows quite comfortably in the 6 full days we were there.  We even managed to make it to the Military Tattoo one night and do a 1/2 day photography tour with James Christie (  The photography tour was well worth the time and money.  James was both entertaining and helpful from a technical/artistic perspective.  Do book him if you have interest in photography.  There were beginner type folks as well as serious photography hobbyists.

We saw a variety of shows from a lecture at the Edinburgh School of Medicine, to comedians, to magicians, to serious drama and, of course, comedies.  Not to be missed....we'll be there again next year....anyone up to join us?!

Enjoy the photos!

Glad you had a great time. Sounds wonderful but not something I would tackle alone.
