The second poorest country in the americas
Entry 39 of 52 | show all | print this entry |
One thing that really struck me when traveling for days on end through the baron landscapes of central America (apart from the hundreds of gangsters trying to sell you US dollars at the border crossings) is the rubbish. Well actually the lack of rubbish and whats now left behind. Now don't panic, I'm not about to get all ´Greenpeace´ on you or anything, but it has to be said here it is really apparent the damage that plastic bags are doing in this world... along the miles and miles of road all that is to be seen along the side of it are plastic bags. Not only bags but plastic bottles, plastic containers, plastic wrappers... you name it, if its plastic its there. The rubbish has decomposed or been eaten by animals and all that now remains is plastic... which will probably be there for the next 100 years. Maybe more, who knows. OK so there is a huge failing in the government of these countries to address the issue but in countries this poor, its really not a priority for them. You can blame other things like lack of education for the people and lack of facilities to dispose of the waste even if they wanted to, but the fact is, its a huge problem. I wonder who has the answers. OK... rant over. back to stupid stories next time...
