I know it was gonna be hot in ayers rock but I didn't think that you can really prepare for the 41 degree heat that smacked me in the face as I stepped from the plane. It was hot, damn hot.
I arrived at the resort, checked in and checked out some of the tours on offer. "how fucking much?" $120 to see uluru at sunrise and another $90 to see the olgas at sunset. "and you have to get up at what time? half four in the pissing morning?" So what with the room and some lunch I had already spent $300 and I'd only been there 30 Min's.
Couldn't resist having a few beers and watching the live music in the bar with a German lad I had met on the plane. Of course, a few beers turn into a few more beers, then another 4 more German lads join us and before you know it, its 1am and I'm getting up in 3 and half hours. I'm fucking plastered stumbling around in the dorm trying to set my alarm clock to wake me up at 4.15am. Somehow I managed to wake up which is more than can be said for Sebastian who missed the entire tour. The tour was with a real boney fidey 'Abbo', or as they like to be called 'Anauju' which mean people in their language so it seems fair to call them that and not 'abbo's' really.
The night before whilst I was getting pissed, there was one hell of a storm happening over ayers rock. Electrical lightening and thunder, and yep you've guessed it rain! They only get 12 inches of rain per year, and numb nuts here manages to to pick one of only a few days of the year they get it... GREAT. The storm was pretty impressive to be honest, but I had kinda hoped to have left all the rain behind me by now and was looking forward to the kind of burning sun that strips the skin of ginger Scottish people. Instead I had to make do with a pathetic 36degrees and not the 47 they had enjoyed a few days earlier.
My guide on the olgas tour 'GIN' as she called herself in her thick Aussie accent (which I'm pretty sure was actually 'JEN', but seeing as though we were all being politically correct I made a point of getting the accent just right) reckoned I should feel lucky that I got to see rain on ayers rock, cause it only happens maybe twice per year... Yeah thanks love. I feel really lucky to see more rain!
Most Aussie's who haven't seen ayers rock seem to be in the opinion that "it's just a big rock" and I'm pretty much in agreement with them. All be it a fucking massive rock. The highlight of the weekend though was taking a helicopter ride over Ayers rock and the Olga's. 40 minutes of pure indulgence costing $150 but worth every penny (sorry, cent.) some amazing views some amazing pictures and some pretty scary turbulence. But an experience never to be forgotten.
