Our second option to get to Frazier Island could have been the village of Rainbow Beach. But of course having already been there we considered not visiting the area but were sold on the idea of dolphin spotting back in Cairns principally the idea of Dolphin kayaking. However as we were to find out there was no luck at the end of our rainbow. Apologies for the pitifully bad pun.
Firstly the hostel we booked into was one of the worst we staying in for a number of reasons. The dorm we stayed was right beside the open air bar where the bar blared music out till all hours of the morning and we also had to listen to the same bar people shout outside our door early in the morning as well. Secondly I had to share my bunk with a guy in the bed above me, twice I caught him sitting on my bed the second eating as well and I politely asked him if he wanted to switch beds since he seemed to like mine so much. Thirdly the kitchen was horrible; it was rarely cleaned and full of flies that crawled over the surfaces and into the open bins.
In saying all that we hoped our dolphin kayaking was going to be worth all the pain. On the first day we were picked up by our lift, drove down to the beach only to see that the weather and waves were not on our side. The guide said it was too dangerous to go out on the kayaks and the swell would blow us out to sea.
And so the next morning we came back and this time we went on the kayaks except no one told the dolphins we'd be there. We spent about three hours paddling in the cold and the rain not catching side of anything. We all a bit a miserable and cold by the time we got back to shore but that's life I guess. It also meant we could leave Rainbow Beach which was good as I could honestly say it was most disappointing place we have visited on our travels.
