Caught the short ferry ride to Koh Samui which is the largest of the three islands. Decided to stay in the main tourist area of Chaweng Beach and soon found a bargain hut by the beach which seemed to be rare there as most places were more expensive, indeed this place was going through refurbishments which would undoubtedly lead to a hike in prices once they were finished. Our hut was right off the beach which long, sandy and the water was cool, what more could you ask for?
I finally got to experience Muay Thai boxing that night as walked to the stadium nearby to watch it. It was good for awhile but I've got to admit it was a little too tactical as the fighters would parry and jab with their feet instead of going for the knockout kick. It was still entertaining though and we had good seats where we saw all the action.
The main strip on Chaweng Beach was fine until you stepped off it and the bars got dodgier the further you travelled. On the walk back we walked past many bars full of neon signs and girls sitting around which isn't unusual for Thailand but this time I was physically stopped by a girl grabbing my arm and trying to get to go into her bar. Before you ask I politely declined.
Locally we found a nice Irish bar called Tropical Murphy's where we broke from our Thai diet to eat hearty breakfasts whilst pouring over the column inches of the Irish Times. Most of the rest of time was spent on the beach or walking around relaxing. The one downside was that it tended to torrential rain in the afternoon while we on the beach so it would be a full out sprint up the beach to our hut to escape it.
