We took a night bus from Bangkok down the coast with our destination the island of Koh Tao. The majority of the bus was travelling to Koh Phangan so those travelling to Koh Tao were placed downstairs beside the lovely toilet. After about seven hours or so of the lovely smells wafting over us, the bus stopped and we were told that the Koh Tao people needed to change buses there. We were assured that a big blue bus would be along shortly which wasn't exactly comforting as it was now four in the morning and the bus stop was just the side of the road in some random town.
Anyway as luck would have it our bus turned up and drove us to the ferry terminal to wait a few hours for the ferry which left around nine or ten morning. At this stage what with the toilet, waiting on the side of the road and waiting around a ferry terminal, I hadn't got any sleep and was quiet tired getting on the boat..
It was a nightmare and I felt like I was going to die. Anyone who has knowledge of the sea will tell you how small boats get rocked by the waves more than larger ones and lucky us; we were on the small boat with one or two waves. Anybody who doesn't know what it's like on one these boats imagine when you were a kid and you made waves in the bath and how much they buffeted your rubber duck or whatever fun toy you had to accompany bath times to make them more tolerable. I won't into the finer details but I had a plastic bag and was glad of it.
When we got there I could barely walk so I sat by the jetty with my head between my legs while people tried to sell their accommodation to me. Most realised that I wasn't in any state to bargain and went off to find more mobile punters but one woman handed us a leaflet and said she would give us space and be back in five minutes. We took a look at it and it sounded quite nice. It was a little resort on the unpopulated east side of the island called Laem Thian. After short discussion we decided to go with it. The woman suggested we get some food and something to drink and she had to pick up some groceries, this being the only large or small town depending on how you look at it.
After awhile, we climbed on the back of her pick up and set off
We spent a few days there and relaxed a fair amount as were surrounded by jungle and the sea and there wasn't another building for at least a few miles. The cove we were in was quite rocky instead of sandy which was a pity but once you stepped in the water little fish swam all around your feet which was great until one of them took a nip out Marie Therese's leg where she had an old mosquito bite, she leapt about ten feet out of the water! Fish treat dead skin like they do with eat coral, they eat it.
Later we went snorkelling which beautiful and saw a variety of the fish but we weren't brave enough to swim up to shark point I'll admit, though I don't think I'd make much of a dinner.
At night we were entertained by fire dancers who twirled what were two lengths of rope with lit wicks on the end. Somehow they managed not set fire to themselves. After a couple of nights we set off for Koh Phangan for the full moon party.

. What we didn't know we had to drive over the side of a mountain to get there clinging onto the metal of the pick up while she bumped through the ruts in the crude track. Supposedly people run 4x4 tours up the track which doesn't surprise me at all. We spent a few days there and relaxed a fair amount as were surrounded by jungle and the sea and there wasn't another building for at least a few miles.
