Where I stayed
Got to Kanchanaburi and had the usual taxi/rickshaw type of hassle walking down to the area where all the gaffs are. Just followed the Canadian couple to be honest as they seemed to have done plenty of reading on the train while I was listening to my Carl cox and reading me Errol Flynn. Got to a place called Blue Star and the 1st 2 rooms they showed me were pretty pokey but the 3rd one was a classic tree house thing with big double bed and its own cold shower and bathroom, all for less than 3 quid. Its on the bank of the river above a swamp so would have thought I'd have malaria by now but no such worries, hardly seen a mossie tho I did have to wield my towel on some kind of flying maneater earlier, he's dead now. Settled in nicely and walked down to the bridge, very touristy but surprisingly mostly Thai people. Coupled with the fact that its Bridge on the River Kwai festival weekend there is quite a lot going on. Went to see the light show in the evening where they recreate the film but with loads of fireworks, light shows and of course a train!! There were some great photos to be had but me being me took my little tripod to get some good night shots but took the other camera bits out me bag (me nice man bag; check it out in the pics...true traveler now!!) and of course the battery ran flat after one shot and a bit of video. Was well pissed off as that show cost me one forty to get into!!
Just chilled out in the evening on my own (well with Errol), had a couple of bottles of Chang and went to sleep early...how long since Simon did that on a Saturday night I wonder.
Its been a relaxing day again today, well with lots of walking. I am going to have to stop walking 10 or 15 miles a day as my back is starting to get sore. Just as well I have my complexion as many people would find themselves sunburnt doing that in the heat of the day. Went to war museum, a few nice bits and bobs but nothing special. Lots of Japanese showing a lot of interest which is good, some Germans too, and a few french.
Am, really enjoying the grub. Eating 2 curries a day and you can add as much chilli's as you like. Lots of fresh fish too. And anything you can put on a stick, it goes on a stick. Yesterday had chicken on a stick, sausage on a stick and dried squid on a stick. As well as my fish curry and chicken curry.
See all the latest pics here.
Off to swim in some waterfalls tomorrow...Mmmm..
