An auspicous day - my birthday
A 7am pickup and one hour car drive left us at the very chaotic port of Padangbai with loads of tourists attempting to board too few boats in order to escape Nyepi. Thankfully the chaos was an illusion to spice the travelers experience and we found ourselves on the correct boat at the correct time with ease. There were seats for 100, all occupied, and only a few extra hangers on as we were propelled by seven 200 horse power outboard motors for the 90 minute crossing to Lombok. There were plenty of life jackets on board and even a safety briefing though far too much noise to hear the the guy was saying. This was a smooth ride across a very deep ocean trench identified by a British naturalist called Alfred Wallace as the division between Asia and Austrasia in terms of Fauna.
Lombok is the next island along the Indonesian chain after Bali and is much poorer, lacking the tourist pull of its neighbour. Gili means `small island` and we went to Gili Air, one of the 3 Gilis off the north West tip of Lombok. There are no cars or motor bikes, just some small horse and carts called cidomos.
Sunday 30th March
Spent most of the day on the water, either in a glass bottomed boat or in the water with a snorkel. Found and followed several turtles and saw loads of lovely choral and fish.
Had a good stretching yoga session in the evening.
The Gilis are a nice relaxing place so we left the after 2 nights.
