Where I stayed
The airplane was delayed by an hour as they had to change a couple of tires due to an 'incident' during the previous landing - not sure if that's a case of 'too much information'.
We are now at a great little hostel in Cairns which, at 15° South, is well back in the tropics. It is hot and humid, but pleasant enough with the air conditioning on.
We were expecting to take a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef but apparently but there is a cyclone (aka hurricane) on the way so we will be helping to batten down the hatches instead.
Sunday 9th March
Phew...it`s hot (but not nearly as hot as India was in April 2009).
The hostel has a small but effective swiming pool and if you put 50p in A/C unit in our room you can really freeze some bits off for 3 hours (neither of which were options in India in April 2009)
Today we took a tour into the rainforest which borders the thin coastal strip that accomodates the city of Cairns. Most interrsting was our `cultural experience` with the Djabugay people. It was very interesting - my boomberang DID come back and I had a useful didgerido lesson.
I feel deeply uneasy at such an event aware, as I am, that the British colonialists did their level best to exterminate the indigenous population of Australia. Here in Queensland it was not until 1965 that they were granted a vote.
The trip was made using a railway built in the 1880s for the goldush.
Monday 10th March
We spent much of the day in and on the water. The Great Barrier Reef deserves the accolade AWESOME (and that is only the second time I have used that particular superlative.) In fact the other two coral reefs I have investigated were pretty awesome at the time (that's the Red Sea and the Caribbean) but this one is soo long.
We saw loads of fish and loads of different types of fish and loads of corals and I saw a turtle wending its peaceful way. Yes it really is like what you see on the TV, only much better!
Tuesday we pickup the campervan and head south.......
