Sunday 2nd March
We drove through the Lyttleton tunnel round the bay and across Gebbies pass to get into the centre of Banks peninsula where we took an easy 2 hour walk. All this was to appreciate the volcanic caldera that foms this remarkable area.
This is a hilly area used for grazing sheep. New Zeland has no native grasses. Before the Pakeha came this land was wooded, and signs of the clearance are still obvious in the form of tree stumps.
Monday 3rd March
Our final day of 4 weeks in New Zealand.
I was last in Christchurch in autumn 2007. We landed on the day that England lost the rugby world cup final to South Africa. Today this is a very different city.
We visited 'Quake City' an exhibition dedicated to the events of 3 years ago.
It is located in re-start mall in which the shops are constructed from shipping containers.
Close by is the devastated cathedral, still propped up by scaffolding and wooden beams.
Reading the NZ papers recently there in growng anger about the amount of time it all taking, about planing arguments and, insurance claims, etc.
7:13pm - ChrIstchurch airport...
Sun streaming though the window
Pink Floyd on the MTVChelsea vs Fulham (uncut) on TV (with no sound)
Good coffee (as always in NZ)
Free Wi-Fi (unusual or NZ)
....It doesn't get much better than this!
