2pm - Currently we are driving south along the East coast of South Island through consistently beautiful countryside.
We hove to at Kiakora for morning cofee. It is a small place with a big name. Only 4,000 inhabitants and not much to see, except lots of nature.
Just north of Kiakora we pulled in by the water`s edge and spotted a colony of at least 100 seals including many suckling youngsters. We watched them for ages just lounging on the rocks and mucking about.
5pm - Stopped in Oxford for a fine cup of tea, but little else happens in this hamlet.
11:30pm - Ensconced in the YHA Hostel at Arthur`s Pass having traveled through some of the finest scenery yet witnessed.
Friday 21st February
We went for 4 hour, strole (14Km or 9 miles there and back) to Bealey's Hut, which was created by sheep farmers as highland refuge, but is now huddled in by hill walkers seeking shelter from the suddenly changeable weather in these parts. Today was fine and no refuge was required.
