Monday 16th December (Beethoven's birthday)

Left La Fortuna on a public bus at 12 and passed through some great countryside. Coffee for as far as the eye could see in all directions.
San Jose is the capital city of Costa Rica. As soon as we turned off the pan American we hit traffic jams and smelly lorries....and MacDonald's, Walmart, MacDonald's, KFC, MacDonald's, a huge bill board offering assistance with erectile dis-function, Malls, Plazas police and more MacDonald's.

Our charming hotel was visited by Ernest Hemingway twice and was well placed in the relatively nice historic centre right next to where the boy ladies and the prostitutes hang out (that's the Del Rey Hotel - I suggest back packers avoid it.)

Tuesday 17th December

Spent much of the day resting (Marian had a bit of  a cold) and planing our escape.
In the afternoon we witnessed a superb cultural event -  THE BOLSHOI BALLET Costa Rica??? Well in fact it was a film but very good for all that. It was a full performance with a 15 minute interval and (as you would expect) featured some excellent ballet. I have not been to a classical ballet before.
In the evening we said our final fair wells to various people ahead of a 6am start on Wednesday.

Who was the last section organized by, I didn't know that you had arranged a 'tour' was this something that you organized once you arrived, or did it just seem the safest way to travel?
