La Fortuna is a few Km from Lake Arenal.
The town was 'invented' when the local volcano erupted in 1968 and it then developed as a tourist destination.

We took a circuitous route from Monteverde through spectacular country side: the mountain roads here are made of compressed hardcore and survive very well.

Sunday December 15th, 9:30pm

Yet another exciting day!

We went white water rafting. The others (in our Intrepid group) took a level 3&4 section of the river Balsa but as we were both nursing sore knees we took the level 2&3 section. It was great fun and the correct decision. In the other group one of the rafts flipped completely and from the other raft one of our fellow travelers fell out!

We then had a demonstration of how one can of sugar is compressed through a hand cranked mangle and produces enough sugary juice for 18 tourists to sample.

In our own raft Marian and I were with a very competent (and patient) helm and 4 Israelis, middle aged and overweight, who spoke little English. Rafting is a team effort. The front guy on the right side looked like Sean Conery, but you could not imagine anyone less dynamic. Every time the helm shouted "Forward" he needed it translated into Hebrew. For the sake of brevity the call went out for each stroke "one" "one" "one" ...but this guy seemed to have trouble counting to one. As a result the forward motion was always skewed clockwise, but our helm manged to compensate. We only had one really close shave when the raft tipped up by about 45 degrees and otherwsie it was rough but plain sailing. Unfortunately no photos!

For lunch we went to an organic farm and were served with food entirely produced on the farm (except for the rice and oil). It was very good. Then we were given a tour of the farm and our guide showed us casava, cocoa, coffee, cinnamon, oregano and a pungent mint and explained how they used various plants to deter pests. Did you know that a pinapple contains no seeds. It is a flower and not a least that's what our guide said - Wikipedia gives a fuller account.

Costa Rica is a very eco friendly country. Read all about it at
